Rita Bento

Rita Bento is Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DECivil), Instituto Superior Técnico of the Technical University of Lisbon (Portugal) where she teaches the courses of Strength of Materials, Dynamics of Structures and Earthquake Engineering, and she develops research work in the field of Earthquake Engineering. She got her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, Structures (1986) and her PhD (1997) from the Technical University of Lisbon. She holds an MSc and DIC (1988) in Earthquake Engineering, from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London (UK).

She has worked in various research projects and presently coordinates the research project POCI/ECM/59306/2004 – “Performance-based Seismic Design Procedures”. The workshop is organized within the scope of this project, reason why the main Sponsor of the event is FCT, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.

The main research topics are in the area of nonlinear modeling and nonlinear assessment and design of buildings for seismic design. Rita Bento is the author or co-author of more than 50 scientific papers published in journals and conference proceedings.
